MENTAL HEALTH
I can't do anything

For the entire past year, I've been missing school assignments, getting them late, or doing big projects last minute. I just can't do the homework at all. I've considered reaching out on this forum a while ago about this problem, and now I finally am. I didn't think it was that much of a big problem, but I'm getting tired of it and I really want to enjoy school without being upset about an assignment I missed all the time. Whenever I need to do the work, my brain just wants to do anything but the work. Sometimes I just bedrot and I don't do anything for the whole day. When I told a few other people about the problem, they just told me to "just do" the homework or that they just simply had the same problem. Those responses are... pretty unhelpful. It has come to the point where I will miss several assignments every day. This has actually started affecting some of my relationships; like not doing work in group projects, and my mom being very disappointed in my grades. My mom told me it was an attitude problem and it might be, I'm trying to be open to all possibilities. If it helps, I'm pretty sure I was a bit depressed earlier in the year? I'm not sure, it was pretty self diagnosed and I'm pretty sure I'm mostly fine now. What should I do about all the missing work? Do a lot of other people have the same problem? Is there a solution? Please help, I don't want to ruin my life so early on. :)

It seems like you need to figure out exactly what is preventing you from doing your school assignments and keeping you from trying to get stuff in on time. As you said, many people might feel it's "laziness" and that you should just sit down and do the work, which may be the case, however, it could also be more than that. So maybe start off by just dedicating a set amount of time every day to doing work. Doesn't have to be exactly this, but make say 4-5 your dedicated homework time where you get out of bed and put away all distractions and just spend a set amount of time getting it all done. Maybe even set up some type of reward system for something you enjoy, like you can't go on your phone until your hour is up (again, you can adjust the times or rewards to fit what is best for you). If it is more than just that, you would need some type of diagnosis to figure out exactly what's going on and then how to start addressing it. Talk to your school counselors or maybe set something up with a mental health counselor outside of school and let them know what's happening and see where it goes. Hopefully that will get the process started of figuring out why you're struggling to get your work done. If you wish to talk further you can chat or call us. Best wishes!

It sounds like you're going through a really tough time with your schoolwork and the feelings of frustration and disappointment that come with it. It’s great that you’re reaching out for support; acknowledging the problem is a significant first step. It’s important to understand that many people struggle with motivation and procrastination, and it can have various underlying causes, including stress, anxiety, or even depression. Instead of viewing this as just an attitude problem, it might be helpful to explore your feelings further, possibly with a counselor or therapist who can help you understand what's going on and develop strategies to manage it. Additionally, breaking assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks and setting achievable goals could help reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. Remember, you're not alone in this, and seeking help is a positive move towards finding a solution that works for you.
