Sharing important perspective

Hello, I’m a student PhD researcher, 24 now, and I’ve been using this organization since I was 13. It’s always been a big support for me, so I’m reaching out with a lot of respect.

I’m not trying to be patronizing or anything like that. I just wanted to ask about something that’s been on my mind. There’s a line I’ve seen often: “If you mention harming yourself, we’re required by law to inform the appropriate authority.” I get that it’s about safety, but isn’t the goal to work with someone to make a safety plan so that it doesn’t have to get to that point?

A lot of people don’t call 911 for a reason. If I reached out to talk, it probably means I didn’t want police involvement. And we know from research (and real experiences) that calling the police can actually make things more dangerous, especially for people from marginalized communities. Sometimes it leads to trauma, even violence or death. There are other options, like mobile crisis teams, or even just talking through what someone needs to feel safe in the moment.

I just wish there was more flexibility, and less of a default “panic mode.” I just hope the organizers of 2ndfloor could review the policy with the latest research, that has evolved since that policy probably was adopted, because I really believe this space can keep evolving in how it supports people.

2NDFLOOR

It's not patronizing to be curious and ask questions. Just to be clear, we are an organization that follows the mandated reporting rules of NJ so it's not a solely a policy of our organization or even people panicking, if someone is harming themselves or saying they plan on harming themselves we have to do what we can do do get help out to that person and ensure their safety. And just to be even more clear, 2NDFLOOR also refers to mobile crisis, safety planning and just talking as well and getting other organizations like emergency services involved takes place when we feel someone is in danger of harming themselves/others or being abused. Hopefully that answers your question as to why certain things need to be reported, it is the law and it is to make sure all of our callers, texters, posters and chatters are all safe. Call or chat anytime and best wishes!

I think sometimes say or typing how terrible you feel can be a step towards not feeling that way alone or to things getting better. It’s the stuff we carry inside that nobody sees that can bring us to dangerous places. I agree with you 💯

This is a safe space to share what's on your mind and to get support from real people.
