Hello, I’m a student PhD researcher, 24 now, and I’ve been using this organization since I was 13. It’s always been a big support for me, so I’m reaching out with a lot of respect.
I’m not trying to be patronizing or anything like that. I just wanted to ask about something that’s been on my mind. There’s a line I’ve seen often: “If you mention harming yourself, we’re required by law to inform the appropriate authority.” I get that it’s about safety, but isn’t the goal to work with someone to make a safety plan so that it doesn’t have to get to that point?
A lot of people don’t call 911 for a reason. If I reached out to talk, it probably means I didn’t want police involvement. And we know from research (and real experiences) that calling the police can actually make things more dangerous, especially for people from marginalized communities. Sometimes it leads to trauma, even violence or death. There are other options, like mobile crisis teams, or even just talking through what someone needs to feel safe in the moment.
I just wish there was more flexibility, and less of a default “panic mode.” I just hope the organizers of 2ndfloor could review the policy with the latest research, that has evolved since that policy probably was adopted, because I really believe this space can keep evolving in how it supports people.
